Action Plan Guidelines, Part 21

Always establish “SMART” Action Plans.

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Time Framed

SMART is an easy way to remember that Action Plans should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time Framed.

Specific = Action Plans need to be specific and concise, because generalities don’t get the job done.  Make sure Action Plans are easily understood, because nothing is so simple that it cannot be misunderstood.

Measurable = Action Plans should be quantified so they can be evaluated to determine if progress is being made.  What gets measured gets accomplished.

Achievable = Make sure Action Plans are realistic and achievable by the employee.

Relevant = Action Plans must be relevant to achieving the company Top Priorities and to the employee.

Time Framed = Expect Action Plans to be accomplished by the specific dates that have been established.

Also, SMART companies are making a sharp break with old habits, breaking with traditional processes and deliberately adopting new ways of behavior.  They are embracing change so that they can make the company:

  • A company where the best people want to work.
  • A company where the best customers want to do business.

In doing so, they are retaining their outstanding employees in a career path, keeping their valued customers and attracting new customers.

It’s just SMART business!
